Shapeoko 5 Pro / 5.1 Pro: Current Sizes, Specs and Buying Fit
Most searchers still call it Shapeoko 5 Pro, but Carbide 3D's current machine is the Shapeoko 5.1 Pro. The important purchase question is not the name change. It is whether the 2×2, 4×2 or 4×4 configuration—and its ballscrew/linear-rail architecture—fits the work you actually plan to run.
Carbide 3D says the 5.1 Pro is the current version of Shapeoko 5 Pro and that the two names may still be used interchangeably. We use “Shapeoko 5 Pro / 5.1 Pro” so older search terminology leads to the current product decision.

The 5.1 update is mostly about the baseframe
Carbide 3D says the primary 5.1 change is a thicker baseframe that increases rigidity. It also enabled a current leg-kit path and threaded front-face locations for vertical workholding. Existing Shapeoko 5 Pro owners can use a manufacturer upgrade kit, so this is an evolution of the same platform rather than a completely unrelated machine.
The motion system is the strongest reason to move up from Shapeoko 4
Shapeoko 5.1 Pro uses HG15 linear rails on every axis. X and Y use 16 mm ballscrews with 20 mm pitch, and Z uses a 16 mm ballscrew with 10 mm pitch. That is a different architecture from Shapeoko 4's V-wheel system and is one of the clearest reasons to consider 5.1 Pro for repeated work or a shop where productivity matters.
The machine still needs a cutting system. Carbide 3D specifies a 65 mm mount and says buyers can use its Compact Router, a compatible Makita trim router, or its VFD spindle. Do not compare the base machine price with an included-spindle machine until you have accounted for that separate purchase.
What it can cut
Carbide 3D explicitly lists wood, common plastics, aluminum and brass for Shapeoko 5.1 Pro. That manufacturer claim is enough for those materials to be considered in selection, but it is not a promise that every alloy, cutter and depth of cut will behave the same way. 4×4 does not mean full-sheet in one setup
The 4×4 configuration gives roughly four feet of travel in each horizontal axis. A standard 4×8 sheet is still longer than that Y envelope, so cabinet and full-sheet workflows either require indexing/tiling or a true 4×8 machine.
